It is no surprise that an open blow-by venting of the engine’s crankcase is 1) inefficient, 2) increases fuel use, 3) allows moisture and dirt back into the engine after shut down, and 4) allows pollutants to enter the atmosphere and contaminate the air we breathe. As a result, the open blow-by ventilation system is being phased out due to stricter crankcase ventilation requirements. The challenge now is to fully enclose an engine’s crankcase without harm to the engine, or hinder its performance.

Unburned and partially burned fuel, known as hydrocarbons, blow past the engine’s piston rings and into the crankcase. In an open venting system, the blow-by tube emits unburned oil, and soot into the environment. Laboratory testing confirms that up to 50% of the blow-by vapor could be attributed to combustion PM escaping past the cylinder rings into the crankcase. Again, open blow-by tubes result in reduced fuel efficiency, dirty undercarriages, unhealthy interior vehicle environment, and un-necessary atmospheric pollution. Additionally, when the engine is shut down, exterior contaminates enter the engine.

Closing the Crankcase of Diesel Engines

Controlling crankcase venting of pre 2006 diesel engines by retrofitting the engines with crankcase control equipment is an accepted practice. There are several systems offered by OEMs and manufactures that "filter" the crankcase vapors FASTech™ does not “filter” the crankcase vapors, instead, FASTech™ uses a patented process to separate and capture these contaminants while allowing "organic fuel" to enter back into the engine’s combustion chamber.

The Fuel and Air Saver™ is the only crankcase ventilation system that has been proven through SAE fuel economy testing to significantly reduce crankcase emissions while increasing fuel economy. This cannot be achieved using filtering technology. Filters must be changed and disposed of, an additional cost and maintenance challenge. FASTech™ requires no filter to purchase or dispose, greatly reducing maintenance cost.

How the Fuel & Air Saver Works
Technology & Terminology

The Fuel & Air System™ installs between the open venting crankcase tube and the intake to the combustion chamber. Since the Fuel & Air System™ is not a filter, is does not perform like a filter! The function of The System is to capture unspent crankcase waste and to retrieve and return valuable unspent fuel back to the engine.

The Separator: As the crankcase gases enter the Fuel & Air Saver™, the patented separation process incorporates 9 laws of physics to separate organic combustible fuel from harmful and non-combustible vapors such as oil, water, and soot. The Separator System is made up of beads contained in a stainless steel wire mesh, and as heavy hydrocarbons make contact with these beads they collect and form liquid droplets. The light hydrocarbons remain in a gaseous state which is routed back to the engine intake.

The Collection Canister: The liquid droplets settle to the bottom of the collection bottle and drain into a larger collection canister where they remain until being removed and recycled with the engine’s waste oil.

The advantage of FASTechnology™ over filtering technology is the ability to distill, capture and return unspent fuel back to the engine's intake for re-consumption. Test results have all validated this achievement and the benefits vary between engines, the environment and driving or working conditions. Even under the most demanding of environments such as with community garbage trucks and their continuous stop and go conditions, the Fuel & Air Saver™ increased fuel efficiency. Under normal driving conditions however, both test results and real world conditions have shown impressive fuel efficiency as well as many other benefits. Two excellent benefits include:

  1. The liquid that settles in the container is disposed of with the crankcase oil during routine oil changes, rather than being returned to the crankcase and creating engine harming soot loading.
  2. Capturing the harmful fumes from the crankcase eliminates fumes from entering the driver’s cabin. This is especially valuable for school busses where fumes can be harmful to children’s lungs.
